NHTSA has decided to grant Nuro, Inc. a temporary exemption from three requirements of FMVSS No. 500 for a highly automated low speed vehicle that the company intends to manufacture under the exemption.  The vehicle for which the exemption applies is a low-speed automated delivery robot called the R2X that has no occupant compartment and no designated seating positions. It would be equipped with storage compartments for hauling goods.  It would be driven by an L4 ADS.  The exemption being granted allows for production up to 2,500 vehicles per year and a maximum of 5,000 exempted vehicles over the full two-year exemption period.  The exemption takes effect immediately.  For an advance copy of the notice, click here.
